Assignment: Design a vision (plan) for the Molenwijk neighbourhood integrating it better with its surroundings. Create a strategy based on a mixed-use neighbourhood that consists on urban and architectonic structures, public, common and natural spaces. Show the relationship between the urban tissue, the public space and the buildings. Hereby the project should meet standards of a contemporary neighbourhood: liveable public space, high intensity, climate adaption, elaboration on housing typology, landscape, economics, program and mobility
Molenwijk is a residential neighborhood in Amsterdam-Noord known for its distinctive 1960s and 1970s architecture influenced by modernism. It features a high concentration of functional and efficient flats and gallery homes, providing ample space to residents. The neighborhood boasts green spaces and is situated near the Noordhollandsch Canal. Its proximity to the NDSM site, a former shipyard transformed into a vibrant cultural hotspot with restaurants, cafes, and creative businesses, has attracted artists and creatives in recent years.
A way of urban design where people can be guided within the neighbourhood by the design of the landscape (public space). To create a truly successful large-scale urban plan, it is crucial to prioritize the integration of ecological structures, green infrastructure, and efficient bike connections. By placing emphasis on these elements, the plan can effectively preserve and enhance natural habitats, seamlessly incorporate ample green spaces, and promote sustainable modes of transportation, ultimately fostering a harmonious and sustainable environment that caters to the needs of all residents.

These buildings, designed to face outward and with inviting public spaces, encourage social interactions and a sense of community. The "retail area" cluster is an extroverted and diverse building designed to meet the needs of different target groups. With a varied range of housing typologies and sizes, it is the ideal place for first-time buyers, young families, and seniors. The building also provides dedicated parking spaces for both residents and visitors of the adjacent shopping center. Additionally, there is a gym located on the northern side of the building, while the southern side features a beautiful green space where water, nature, and activity converge. The "retail area" cluster is a socially responsible urban project that creates a vibrant and inviting space for people of all ages and backgrounds.
The 'watersport' cluster utilizes and transforms an existing school building, creating a dynamic and versatile environment. With a two-sided orientation, the building fosters a vibrant atmosphere. On one side, water recreation is introduced, activating the water and establishing a direct connection with the beautiful natural reserve of 'Het Twiske' on the project's northern side. On the other side, the building accommodates amenities such as restaurants, sunny terraces, and residences. This combination results in a lively and attractive destination where residents and visitors can enjoy various water sports activities, the serene beauty of nature, social interaction, and a vibrant ambiance.
The "education" cluster is a designed building that combines residential and educational functions. With separate entrances on the north and south sides, it provides clear separation between the school and residential areas. The cluster includes various facilities such as childcare, primary school, and a gymnasium, utilizing the entire surface area of approximately 5000 square meters. It adjoins a sports park that serves as a schoolyard during school hours and as a community sports park outside of school hours. This project showcases the successful integration of housing, education, and sports, creating a vibrant and harmonious environment for residents, students, and the community.
