Assignment: Design a shelter to connect people more with other living creatures in the city. A bird-hide to look at birds, insects and small mammals which live in the city. A one-person place where you can sit, stand and walk. A place where you can slow down and explore what is actually happening around you, without disturbing or interfering with it. The materials will be basic (only) natural materials: reed and twigs of willow.
Together with a team of 4 fellow students, we achieved this wonderful result. I couldn't have achieved this without Kay Bos, Mikki Broeren, Ayça Özüm Sevinç and Casper Buur.
We started sketching and came up with the concept: 'Calimero'. During this sketching- and brainstorming session, in addition to the aesthetic quality, we also often thought about the construction and realization of this concept within a short realization period of 6 afternoons).
Our secret for our smooth end result was a solid construction where different techniques for knotting, binding and weaving reed and willow branches are combined. We used big willow branches for the main construction and tied them together with smaller wetted willow branches. Through trial and error we found good ways to use the strength of the wood. These techniques were mainly reflected in the stool. Here we auctioned, drilled, knotted and woven the branches, which led to a strong end result.
As already mentioned, only natural materials have been used. Our group is the only group that has succeeded in this which has made our concept really strong.
