This project is an exploration of radical forms of living with the main goal of relieving the Dutch overheated housing market within ten years. In this project, a theoretical research was first conducted into the difference in supply and demand when it comes to the different living environments. Radical forms of housing were then examined by means of design research. from this 'VariantenWijzer' was created, a design tool in which forty variants are shown. In order to be able to assess the use of radical forms of housing, specific locations were explored. This research is limited to the MRA, the place where the housing shortage is too high. The SAAL line can be found within the MRA, the rail connection that connects Schiphol, Amsterdam, Almere and Lelystad. This connection will be intensified in the coming years, so that corners of this connection will become interesting. This research focuses on Lelystad-South. This is one of the few places in the Netherlands where a station that is not in use. We saw this as excellent opportunity to place the example elaborations to give.
In the example elaborations, the design is based on three environments, namely: village, urban and landscape. I focused on the village example elaborations with the aim of applying the radical forms of housing and being able to assess whether this can deliver urban development quality. The plan map and a corresponding cross-section of one of the two variants can be found on these pages. In this example elaboration, the design is based on the vision of Lelystad in combination with essential points arising from the Garden City movement. It is difficult to apply radical forms of housing on a large scale. It is important that people are aware that radical forms of housing are an addition to, but not a replacement for, traditional housing.
